Prosperity for Every Generation

Imagine if every family in New York had the opportunity to define prosperity on their own terms and realize it for both adults and children.

Despite recent progress, we still have a long way to go.

“I am using my uncle’s address in Park Slope, so that my son is eligible to go to a better school. I just can’t have him go to school in the hood we’re in.”
Mother, Brooklyn
“I am making $100 too much to get benefits. They think I can work my way out of my present situation, but there just aren’t enough hours in the day to make enough money with a low-wage job.”

“I can’t talk to that kid about becoming a neuroscientist when I don’t know where her next meal is coming from.”
YOUTH MENTOR, MANHATTAN

Millions of New Yorkers live below or at the poverty line, cycling in and out of crisis and the City services that treat crisis. Today, very few of these families are able to achieve economic mobility from generation to generation.

Our Theory of Change

We know that families can’t succeed if we stick to business as usual. We need a new approach that’s ...

Not focused on one individual in isolation...but on the whole family as a unit of impact.
Not just solving short-term crises...but building bridges to long-term prosperity.
Not only providing resources...but helping build the agency and social capital to move forward.
Not driven by organizational requirements...but centered in clients’ everyday lived experience.

Generation Prosperity

As a New York City initiative, rooted in health and human services as the starting point, our goal is to help families increase their economic mobility from one generation to the next, resulting in true prosperity for everyone. Through this initiative we will evolve City services and create client experiences that are deeply rooted in the hopes, desires, and strengths of families in New York City. By delivering family-centered services that enable children and adults to define their own futures, we can help all New Yorkers realize the success in life that they richly deserve.
One
We’ll leverage moments of crisis and critical moments for change to transform into  moments to help New Yorkers dream and plan for the future they want for their families.
Two
We’ll boost adult income and early child learning—outcomes that research shows are key to realizing this generational shift.
Three
We’ll help people build agency, social capital, and overcome concrete barriers—each critical to realizing the long journey
to prosperity.
